The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
