Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
